Vintage Label and Postage Stamp Jewelry

While living in Amsterdam, I often visited the Waterloo flea market for odds and ends. On the far edge I came across an old couple selling all manner of paper memorabilia, photos, labels, maps and old letters. I fell in love with a few labels from an old store on the same canal I lived on - Prinsengracht. They must have been for Dutch and Belgian or maybe French distribution, since most of the labels are in French. A glorious upcycling opportunity!

Sometime last year, I realized I was saving stamps. I came across a couple that were eye catching and calling out to be upcycled. Now paper treasures catch my eye wherever I go... fruit labels, vintage postcards, old advertisements, stamps... all snapshots of moments in time transformed into wearable art.

Compass Rose Design was born last year when I got married and wanted a personal gift to thank the ladies who helped make the day awesome. I decided on antique button jewelry. I wore a red wedding dress, we ate chocolate cake, and let's say the garden was full of magic making and merriment. Creating antique button necklaces for these women sparked a passion for found treasures and upcycled jewelry. Each button holds a story reworked into a piece ready for a new set of memories.

At Compass Rose Design, I've been making wire wrap jewelry for the last ten years with vintage and found treasures. Each piece is handmade, reflecting a bit of treasure renewed into something unique and beautiful. Compass Rose Design offers an eclectic mix for casual and elegant occasions. Every creation combines Victorian or vintage buttons, pocket watch pieces, Czech glass, found objects, vintage style charms, Austrian crystal, vintage prints, and a lot of love. I enjoy thinking about the story of each button – from a corset or waistcoat or evening gown – through the ages to you – highlighted with glinting garnet, crystal and glass.
