Etsy New York City Holiday Shop - College Radio - Jesse Thorn is a Hero

A while back, I send Jesse Thorn and his awesome wife Theresa a couple of our Compass Rose Design cufflinks and a few other items as a gift - a thank you for their work - a solidarity action to another awesome husband/wife team - and because Jesse is one classy dude. This couple is amazing - they have managed to rally a community of extremely clever people across the country and beyond and now employ others. What other modern gentleman cares so deeply about fashion history as much as baseball and a good SF burrito, all while being charming and entertaining. His menswear blog, Put This On, is an extremely well crafted operation. Turns out Jesse somehow dropped of a pair of cufflinks in New York and they are a great fit for the New York City folks! Today I got a note from Etsy - like real Etsy admin staff with an invitation to feature our NYC Railroad Uniform Button cufflinks and tie clips for the Etsy Holiday Shop in New York City.

The Etsy Holiday Shop will be in SoHo, apparently next door to Dior and down the block from Apple at 131 Greene Street. Read more about it here. Our Compass Rose Design NYC mens cufflinks and tie clips, made with genuine antique uniform buttons from the New York Central Railroad - are a perfect fit!

I met my husband, Johnny, while doing college radio. I was a DJ at KZSC, Santa Cruz 88.1 and he did a documentary show on the local NPR affiliate. I remember giving Johnny mini documentaries I'd made under the auspices of getting his feedback, but really it was an excuse to visit this captivating and clever guy who intrigued me so much that I married him. We were the last days before the boards went digital and ipods took over. Nothing will ever replace the satisfaction of knobs and lights and the satisfaction of the old-school board.

While I was at KZSC, a younger, very smart and motivated comedian and talk show host joined the station. I remember getting the first sample demo cassette to review of "the Sound of Young America" with "Jesse Thorn, America's Radio Sweetheart." In a group of 50 or so people who cruised in for their radio spot and shuffled through the library to find what moved them - Jesse came to the table with extreme skill and preparation, even then. And he had a kindness about him. I remember he would occasionally have his much younger brother guest star and tell jokes on air - he was able to share the sweet comedy of an 8 year old at the microphone without a trace of ridicule.  I found this old KZSC photo - not sure if Jesse is in it, but I'm the hippie in the brown shirt by the banister.

Jesse is everything I love about Terry Gross and Marco Werman, but he is FUNNY and extremely fluent in discussing pop culture, music, sports and really most anything with a deep knowledge and refreshing perspective. He celebrates the whimsical angst in Werner Herzog and may be the only interview Harvey Pekar ever actually enjoyed (and said as much). Jesse is interested in the history of things, which is at the center of my own work. He is unafraid to obliterate political correctness yet has deeply compassionate human rights perspective and maintains a profoundly respectful space completely void of meanness. Anyways - my husband and I are supporter members (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) of the Maximum Fun empire and avid listeners of both Jesse's more serious interview show, Bullseye, and our most favorite and hilarious podcast, Jordan Jesse, Go!. Jesse also happens to be an excellent comic and commentator - and he's a great dad. A real life modern man of the best variety.

We're totally thrilled! We're celebrating our 3rd anniversary next month here at Compass Rose Design and this feels like a nice landmark! Johnny and I could not be more grateful to be full time designers and makers. Thank You Jesse. Thank You Etsy. Thank You Everyone.
